American
Cancer Society Awareness: Sept.
National Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month
Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer:
Early prostate cancer
usually causes no symptoms and is most often found by a PSA test.
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a substance made by cells in prostate gland (it
is made by both normal cells and cancer cells). Although PSA is mostly found in
semen, a small amount is also found in the blood. Most healthy men have levels
under 4 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood. The chance of having
prostate cancer goes up as the PSA level goes up. If your PSA level is high,
your doctor may advise a prostate biopsy to find out if you have cancer. If
your PSA test result is not normal, ask your doctor to discuss your cancer risk
and your need for further tests.
Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month
What are leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma?
Leukemia
is a type of cancer that starts in the soft, inner part of the bones called the
bone marrow. It often moves quickly into the blood where it can spread to other
parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, central nervous
system (brain and spinal cord), and other organs.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (also known as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, NHL,
or sometimes just lymphoma) is a cancer that starts in cells called
lymphocytes, which are part of the body's immune system. Lymphocytes are in the
lymph nodes and other lymphoid tissues (such as the spleen and bone marrow).
